Overseas

26th of May, 2007

I’ve held off writing about this for a really long time. I wanted to wait until it was absolutely certain that I’d be going. After finding out on Thursday that I received a $3000 academic scholarship to be used on the trip I can’t contain my excitement any longer. On the 17th of August I’ll be on a plane to New York City, a week later I’ll be in San Francisco, another week later I’ll be in Calgary, Alberta, Canada where I’ll be spend a semester at Mount Royal College.

I know, Canada, it won’t exactly be a culture shock, there’s probably no country in the world more like Australia, except maybe New Zealand. Without offending Canadians, it wasn’t my first choice, Sweden looked good for a long time but courses didn’t come close to matching. That was the case everywhere, Canada was the only option. That’s not to say I’m not happy to be going to Canada, I can’t wait! I’ve had a lot of friends go there recently and they have nothing but great things to say.

To be honest, I’m more excited about living out of home than living overseas. A lot of people have been asking if I’m nervous or apprehensive, I’m not, I’m just excited. Something else that gets asked often is will there be someone coming here to replace me - I don’t think so, while it’s called student exchange I don’t think there has to be a direct exchange but if there is, we don’t have anything to do with each other.

Studying overseas or even long term overseas travel was never a dream of mine - it kind of just happened. I heard about student exchange, I went to the information seminar, I applied and by the time I was accepted, I’d barely even thought about it.

Of course I’ll keep on bloggin’ but I’d also like a to keep a travel log run by SimpleLog. If you’re in one of the cities I’m visiting and want to meet up or if you have a suggestion for somewhere I should visit or something I should do, let me know.
