Facebook Has a Degenerative Disease
9th of August, 2007
It’s called Apps and it’s turning Facebook into MySpace. Top friends, comments that allow images and video, quizzes and music players, for every MySpace feature Facebook lacks at it’s core there’s a Facebook App to make it happen. They don’t just add MySpace functionality either, they add MySpace bad design.
It’s a highly infectious and contagious disease too. I can’t even watch my friends videos without “installing” the app on my own account. It won’t be long before Facebook withers away, the MySpace disease, gone undiagnosed for so long is almost always fatal.

Personally I’m also against the apps phenomenon, but a few things should best be noted:
1) They’re use is voluntary (though you have no control over seeing other people’s app-related news feeds - something that you should be able to turn on and off, but for the time being there’s always a Greasemonkey script that can do this on userscripts.org).
2) As for having to install an application yourself before being able to see it on another user’s page, this makes some sense. It’s like trying to view a .vob file on your PC without any media software. Plus, you can choose to ‘add’ the application, but not to have any links or details about it on your own profile in any way.
For me, they’re a minor annoyance (pirates, give me a break), but thankfully most users on Facebook are well known to be of a slightly higher calibre than those on MySpace. Non-PC perhaps, but true!

I agree with you 100% of the way. All my friends have tons of them. Most of them also have those stupid SuperWalls, sometimes 2 or 3 different type of Wall apps. I’m really disappointed in Facebook. If they really want apps, they should have to be reviewed and edited to fit in with the design.

Well at least FaceBook LOOKS better and cleaner than MySpace. But as long as we are talking about over saturation of Apps how about the proliferation of MySpace and YouTube wanna be’s? There are just too many video sites to visit and find the best of the best worth watching. This is a problem that has grown worse over the last few months. Thats why we developed the VeZoom video search engine makes finding videos that are interesting to you without having to track them down from 100 different video sites. We are also developing an App for video search that works inside FaceBook.

It’s really your friend’s choices you should be disappointed with, not Facebook.
